Letter #153: Fever…’Bieber Fever’

March 2, 2011

Dear fever,

Typically when people talk about you it’s in reference to an unhealthy increase in body temperature. Nowadays, this is no longer the case. A now 17 year old Canadian kid has stolen your thunder and exposed you to a new light. Justin Bieber has turned the mention of you into immediate thoughts of ‘Bieber fever.’

How has he done it? Being in the right place at the right time, hard work, Usher doesn’t hurt and of course by ‘Never Say[ing] Never.’ He is currently one of the most famous people in the world, and it all started at his house on YouTube. I bet Justin’s thankful Scooter, his manager, stumbled across the videos he posted for his distant family! Seriously, it all started on YouTube (here’s the video that sold Scooter) with a 12 year old performing with fleeting dreams of becoming what Justin Bieber is today.

Today, he’s the talk of teens everywhere, with every girl hoping, praying she’ll become ‘One Less Lonely Girl.’ His face is everywhere too. MVP of the All-Star Celebrity Basketball game. Premiere and promotions for his movie, which let’s be honest there was absolutely zero need for it to be 3D…however, they’re making a truckload more money because it is. Performing on all the biggest stages including the Grammy’s (if you haven’t seen this performance, check it out!).

So, here’s this kid creating more Twitter trends and buzz than the Libyan uprising, taking the music industry by storm, brainwashing girls everywhere and playing ‘Eenie Meenie’ miny moe and other games along the way to ensure he doesn’t miss all his childhood.

However, his antics don’t stop here. ‘One Time,’ he interviewed with Rolling Stone and made some bold and controversial statements. When asked about God:

It says in the Bible that you go to heaven as long as you have God in your heart and ask for forgiveness of your sins,” (YES!!!!)

“I don’t think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them.”

“I really don’t believe in abortion. It’s like killing a baby.” How about in cases of rape? “Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.”

I’m impressed by his, at the time, 16 year old thoughts and willingness to speak into these topics. Now, Biebs isn’t 100% theologically correct in all his statements, but he’s much further along than I was at 16 and than the typical Hollywood mindset.

He also seems to have a fairly good heart and willingness to serve. For his birthday yesterday, he asked fans to donate to Charity Water, a project working to get clean water to developing countries.

So, here I sit, a 23 year old professional writing about Justin Bieber. Four Kanakuk directors (here’s a great blog about Bieber by one of them) and myself went to the movie together this weekend. LOVED it, and yes, we were by far the oldest people in the theater without children! If I wasn’t a fan before, I am now. This kid came from nothing to the sensation he is today. He is the epitome of inspiring stories, of believing in yourself, working hard and making things happen. Sure, he caught some breaks along the way, but at the end of the day he has worked hard, sacrificed a ton and created a phenomenon. He’s finding ways to make ‘U[s] Smile.’ He might just be a ‘Baby’ in the world’s eyes, but he’s also become an idol…at times, an unhealthy one. Ladies and Gents, I don’t think he’s going away, so embrace it, pray and hope he doesn’t fall into the trap of fame and catch the fever…Bieber Fever!

I’ve got a partial you…the 23 year old version,

Unashamed Bieber fan
